Niacinamide Side Effects & When to Stop
Niacinamide has a reputation for being “gentle” – and it often is. But no ingredient is irritation-proof for everyone. Reactions can happen, especially with high percentages or when your barrier is already stressed.
Common, Often Manageable Reactions
- Mild tingling for a few seconds when first applied.
- Temporary slight warmth or pinkness.
- Feeling a bit tight if the formula is drying.
These reactions should fade quickly and not appear worse with each use. If they stay mild and your skin otherwise looks calm, you may simply need more moisturiser or a gentler routine.
Warning Signs – Pause or Stop Use
- Burning or stinging that lasts more than a few minutes.
- Intense redness or hot, flushed skin.
- Hives, itching or swelling.
- Breakouts that are widespread, painful and persistent.
In these cases, stop the product and switch to a bare-bones routine: gentle cleanser, bland moisturiser, sunscreen. If symptoms are severe, seek medical advice.
“Purging” vs Irritation
Niacinamide does not increase cell turnover like strong retinoids or acids, so it is unlikely to cause classic “purging”. If breakouts start or worsen with niacinamide, it is more likely:
- A reaction to the overall formula (fragrance, oils, texture).
- Barrier overload from using too many actives at once.
- Coincidental timing with other changes in your routine or life.
Severe, painful, long-lasting or rapidly spreading reactions should always be assessed by a healthcare professional. This page is not a substitute for medical advice.
